Mephibosheth Ministry originated in Colorado Springs, USA in 1992. In 2001, a physical therapist was sent from Mephibosheth Ministry to begin providing physical therapy and distributing wheelchairs provided by Joni and Friends/Wheels for the World to the physically and mentally challenged in many towns and villages in the Cape Coast region of Ghana, W. Africa. After some time, the leadership realized that the physically and mentally challenged needed something more than wheelchairs.
Mephibosheth in Ghana formed two family support groups in Cape Coast and Abdom. One of the primary concerns of the family groups was the obstacles they were facing in getting their children enrolled in school. Funds were gathered and a

ground-breaking ceremony was held at Ankamu for the Mephibosheth Training Centre. On March 7, 2005, the centre doors were opened with nine children enrolled. The children at our centre are survivors. When you hear about their birth history, the environment they live in, and the situations that their family put them in, you would be amazed that they are still alive.

The criteria for admission to the school are that the child has special needs, is educable and would have difficulty performing well in a government school.

We are located in the Central Region -- Ankamu, which is near Apam junction. Mephibosheth Ministry in Ghana, a NJ nonprofit organization was formed. In 2008, 501 (c)(3) status was granted by the IRS.

Currently we have 40 students enrolled in the school. We have completed 3 dormitories and 1 school building. The children range from 4 to 22 years of age with various diagnoses. Why such a wide range? We feel that if we can reach a child at a young age we will have a greater impact. Children learn the most before the age of 5. The 19-year old had seizures and was left in a cage for five years before another NGO found her. Her father died the same time she began having seizures and the family felt that she was the cause of his death and left her in the cage.

The goal behind the school is to make the students functional members of society. To accomplish this we plan to give the child an education, teach them how to take care of themselves (you would be surprised at how many children were not toilet trained before coming to the school), and how to be a functional member of a family. Upon completion of their education they will be taught a vocation that will be practical to the community that they are going to live in.

Every child has a story and each one has been changed by your donation. You have also given their parents hope. Everyone thanks you and prays that you will continue supporting this ministry.
